I saw this at Hsbaseballweb and thought it was interesting. Assuming you have two assistants, where do you like to coach from and why?

    Coaching position

I prefer to stay in the dugout. This gives your team a better opportunity to discuss certain situations with your players that will come up later in the game. I also feel that it is easier to substitute players in and out this way because you arent so caught up in coaching the bases and telling runners the situations which are just as easily done by your assistants. The real negative to this is that if you dont have faith in your assistant coaches or you like to make decisions on the fly with baserunners or possible bunting or hit-n-run times. Just my opinion. I would love to hear other peoples views here.

Information like this, opinions and differences is what makes baseball the best sport. We haven't done as much of it this spring as usual, but I've missed. If you don't like the topic, don't read it.

Don't worry Pops. Clamcakes decided he was going to open his own website so he can amuse himself with his own posts.

The thing that I will never understand is this, If one is not interested in a thread, the solution is easy.....

Interesting topic .... to a certain extent, I think it depends on whether the head coach is offensive oriented or defensive oriented.

Assuming that your H.S. head coach played in college, I would bet that you will find the guys who were pitchers staying in the dugout and the hitters coaching third. :laugh1: :laugh1:

I think OBJ is dead on...but it depends on one's style. If you have a trusted assistant, you can have a better opportunity to coach your players about game situations during the game from the dugout.

    Dugout

I only coach an AAU/USSSA team, not high school, however, anyone who has played in this environment knows the games are competitive. Games go by pretty fast when your involved in them. If I'm coaching a base I don't feel like I have time for planning strategies or game situations. When coaching a base I tend to get tunnel vision and don't focus on the complete game. I'd rather be in the dugout so that I can see the whole picture. How many times, especially in little league games, have you seen a coach run off a base and make a quick decision?

Thanks Burnsdad for your opinion. This is not for HS coaches only. There are not many of those guys that will post on here. They will read daily, but they won't post.

I think there are good arguments for both sides, I'm just interested in opinions.
