Wes McCall, State Champion Ashbrook High School, State Game’s player. Wes was the leader of a very young championship team. If there was a big game to pitch or a key hit to be made…Wes always came through. The first time I saw Wes play was as a sophomore. I remember saying then, ”Wow….wait til this kid is a senior!” Well…he is now and he sure has made a name for himself. I appreciate Wes taking the time to answer a few questions for us and look forward to reading his answers:

Congratulations, Wes, on your signing with UNC-G. Tell us about it?

Signing with UNC-G was a hard decision because its hard to choose where you will live the next 4 years of your life. I went on a unofficial visit to Greensboro and knew that was the school I wanted to attend. I know I can bring something to the table for Greensboro.

Ashbrook High School was the 3A State Champions last year. That had to be exciting! What was it like for you?

The ride to Zebulon was exciting; all the guys were hyped up and ready to win. It’s a once in a lifetime experience for most people and all us of soaked it in. The whole experience in Zebulon was a first but hopefully not the last.. You can't ask for anything more than to play with those guys. Having that much talent on one team makes the whole experience even better and you couldn't ask for better coaches.

How do you think you guys will do this year?

Ashbrook is going to be pushing forward all season. The guys are ready for another great season and ready to give everything they have into winning ballgames. You will see determination from this group of guys all season long.

I know you are a role model for the young players in Gastonia and elsewhere: What advice do you have for them?

To young athletes, I would say that to be the best player you can… practice as much as you can. When you're not getting better, someone else is.

What are you doing to prepare for this season?

To get ready for this season, I’ve been doing an assortment of things from lifting weights to getting mentally prepared for what the team and I have to do better than last year. Knowing your mistakes and then improving on them can help a team out a lot.

Best player you have played with?
    Brock Thornburg

    Favorite food:
    Chinese

    Favorite Movie:
    Scarface

Tell us something that most people don’t know about you?
    I'm a Dodge man

The best time you have ever had (outside of baseball)?
When I went to Disney World with friends from my class.

The one person who influenced you the most in baseball?

Gary Robinson is the man who influenced me the most in Baseball. I played Baseball on Gastonia teams almost all my life but I started taking lessons from him when I was about 11 years old. From then until now, Gary taught me 99% of what I know and use on the diamond. He got on my case a lot of the time but that helped me out more than anything. Gary brought the competitor in me, he taught me to be the guy who doesn't care about what anyone else thinks but does the job he is assigned to do. I thank him for teaching me what he knows about the game.

What a great kid! (although he is a dodge man:) ). Don’t be surprised to see the Greenies finish their year as #1 and accept another HUGE ring again. Bill and Debbi must be very proud of their son…and all the people that know Wes are very proud of him as well.

OBTW--- Drew Martin keeps me informed all the time of how you guys are doing and he never misses an opportunity to show me his championship ring:D

Just kidding.......great interview, great kid, and great player. I really injoyed seeing Wes play in the State Games. What a combination of a great lefty pitcher and hitter. Good luck on your quest of a repeat of State Champions,( I hope we'll see you there ) and good luck at UNC-G.

Wes is a hard-nosed player who plays the game the right way. All out, all the time.

    UNC-G has gotten it'self a gem. I'm glad we're in 4A this year.

Congradulations Wes on your commitment to UNC-G. I enjoyed watching you and the other guys down in Jupiter this fall. I know my son enjoyed playing with you on the Red Sox Scout Team. Good luck on a repeat this year in high school.
