Sorry for this but could anyone briefly explain what the different levels mean and how they are defined? (i.e. 1A/2A etc...).

    Thanks

It's based entirely on school size...
1A (or A) are the smallest 1/4 schools in the state
2A (or AA) are the next 1/4 schools etc etc....

There are a couple exceptions based almost entirely on travel times when a slightly smaller or larger school has to play "up" or "down".

The largest schools in the state are 4A. There are about 340 public high schools in the state. Each division has about 85-87 schools in it.

Due to the travel time it takes to go east/west in the state (6 hours from the coast to some areas in the mountains), almost everything is broken down East/West, again, to limit travel time until you reach the state championship games.

The home page of the NCHSAA website http://www.nchsaa.unc.edu has links to the 2003-4 ADM numbers that are used to determine classifications and shows the schools in each class. It has been several years since realignment and there have been many new schools and much growth in some areas of the state. It looks like there will be quite a bit of shuffling when schools are realigned.

The re-shuffle is scheduled for the 2005-2006 school year. It's done every 4 years. We are currently in year #3 of the last re-shuffle.
