Patrick Adams, West Rowan HS and State Games pitcher, is considered one of if not the best pitcher in the State. The hard throwing righthander explodes his fastball with a knee-buckling curve that leaves most batters thanking the umpire for calling them out after 3 pitches. Patrick is strong, fearless and aggressive as a player…but humble as a person. One of the great kids in our state, we appreciate Patrick taking the time during the Christmas break to answer a few questions at TBR:

1.Congratulations on your signing with Elon. Tell us about it?

Elon was one of the first schools that contacted me. Coach Kennedy and Coach Alexander stayed in contact either by mail or phone. When my family and I visited Elon's campus I knew that Elon was going to be one of my top choices. The campus was very clean and it was very quiet. The thing about Elon was that it was close to home, but yet it was far enough away too.

    2. West Rowan had a great year this past season. How do you feel you guys will do this year?

I feel that West Rowan will have another great season this year. We have all of our starters back this year except for our 2nd baseman and a starting pitcher. All of our seniors that were juniors last year are back and all fired up over the way our season ended against Piedmont. This year we will be one of the contenders for the State Championship title because it is our last year and we want to finish it with a State Championship.

    3. You have been rated the top pitcher in the State by many sources. How do you handle all the accolades?

I have seen different articles stating that I'm possibly one of the better pitchers in the class of 2004 in North Carolina. The truth is that there are a lot of great pitchers in our class and I'm proud to be rated as one of them. I set my goals high and I work very hard to try to reach them.

    4. Who influenced you the most in your baseball career?

My father has influenced my baseball career more than anyone else. He has always taught me to work my hardest. He has always taught me to strive to do my best and be the best I can be.

    5. Knowing that there are many young kids in your area that would like to emulate you, what advice do you have for them?

The best advice that I have for all kids, is that they need to keep focused on their goals in life. They have to do their best and try their hardest to achieve them.

    6. The best player you have played with?

The best player that I ever played with would have to be Ryan Wilson. He is a lot like myself. He has been a great friend of mine for many years. He has always worked and tried hard to be the great baseball player that he is.

    7. Your favorite food?

Grilled chicken and fresh cooked vegetables

    8. Your favorite movie?

    Bull Durham and The Patriot

    9. What do you like to do on your days off?

I spend my time outside of baseball with friends, lifting weights, and hunting.

    10. What is the one thing that you are most proud of?

The achievement that I am proud of is my scholarship to Elon, but the biggest achievement that I'm proud of is, that I'm an Eagle Scout

Wow….an Eagle Scout!! What a terrific achievement Patrick. I wonder how many other baseball players or any athlete for that matter have achieved this marvelous award. I remember seeing Patrick as a 14 year old pitching for the On Deck team. Patrick obviously displayed his advanced FB, but I noticed they would not allow him to throw his devastating CB. I asked Mike Shildt about that and he said “ Braves, Patrick is going to be devastating when he is older and I’m not going to allow him to risk his future by throwing a curve at his age. This kid will be throwing 90’s when he is older”…how prophetic.

Thank you Avery and Beth for sharing your son with us and look forward to watching Patrick this spring at West Rowan and at Elon next year.

Nice interview. One of the truly fine young men of HS baseball in NC.

Good luck, Patrick, both this season and for many seasons to come.
