"SENIORITIS"

All of us at the high school level have dealt with this issue, if you have not eperienced it, or have the absolute solution, get ready to make millions!!!!

What do you guys do (not what we wish we could do)with senior players that have talent, but do not want to be leaders and get better... they are satisfied with themselves?

Could be a good discussion topic for our younger coaches...

 

For the most part, boys think they know it all by this stage of their life. Good luck to those who do coach boys and i personally think its the job of parents as well as the coaches to consistently remind them of the importance of contiuned growth in abilities, practicing them and to set goals beyond grade school(still 12 graders)Years regardless of their potentials at the next level of education. I would have each Senior stated their Goals and plan of action to reach each goal in writing(4 copies) for the team, the coaches, their parents and especially for themselves. Read aloud and discuss is useful!! Help them to Understand;
the importance of setting goals, their responsiblities to team(job),the committment that is required to implement their plan of action and some just good ole communication and hard work will serve them well after their Senior year of childhood.

For those of you who coach seniors that dont want to be leaders, dont force them to be. Leadership is born it cant be taught, however it can be nurtured. if someone has the ability to lead make sure they do it in a possitive way, to those who dont like to say much, or dont like to be the guy to get ur team ready dont make them be that guy.

however, remind these people to do it by actions. they dont have to be vocal to get a point across, inform them that underclassmen look up to them, and will follow by example. if they work hard so will the underclassmen.

dont try to force somebody to be something they aren't.

Seniors can be a touchy/iffy situation yet in my experience they have always been a positive within my teams/experience. I cannot think of in the past of having to or needing to "cut" one for I saw them as not contributing in ANY way! I think loyalty goes a long way in developing your program too!! Interesting comments on leadership!? I think leadership and MATURITY go hand and hand whether it is done vocally or by example... Could be a potential problem.............

What about the senior that has signed to play college ball and "relaxes" his senior year?
I have witnessed this several times. It is not pretty and very obvious from seeing them play before hand.
