New thread started because of inquiry from cougardad back on B/G Classic I WFU thread:

My son has been invited to the impact prospect blue-grey classic in Winter Haven, Florida over Labor Day Weekend. He is very excited about attending as there is no attention given to his high school team by college coaches. He is a senior this year and would like to play at the college level next year. Iam wondering if it is worth the time and expense of getting him from Asheville to Winter Haven and back. If you could share your thoughts on the value of this showcase, I would appreciate it.

What position does your son play and is he planning on playing on a fall showcase team for rising seniors in 2003?

According to Gus Bell, Director of Pro-Motion Sports USA (Blue-Grey Classics):

Most player prospects and clients, who have earned the right to represent their state or region at a Blue-Grey Classic event, feel that not only did they receive maximum recruiting exposure, but they had a great experience.

The players also experience the total commitment that the Pro-Motion staff has to each prospect and parent in a joint effort to accomplish all a player’s recruiting goals. When the Classic event is over, the Pro-Motion staff is still supposed to continue to work to make sure that the player is recruited heavily.

This particular Classic event (B/G VI-B/G Showtime) will have as many as 95 colleges and nearly every Major League Team in attendance.

My vote is 3 thumbs up for ANY Blue-Grey Classic event...

He is a RHP and middle infielder. Radar - 86, 60yrd. - 7.1. Having said that, he played every infield and outfield position except first base and catcher for his legion team this summer. He is playing in the WNC Fall Baseball wooden bat league beginning in September.

My son recieved an invitation to Blue/Gray VI just the other day. It would be fun to go but he's already committed to the Blue/Gray IV @ Coastal Carolina 8/22-24. Good luck to your son cougardad.

Your son must have caught someone’s eye at some point in time to have been invited to a Blue-Grey Classic event. The B/G Classic events usually feature some of the top high school prospects in the Nation.

My son tried out and will be attending the Blue-Grey Classic IV @ Coastal Carolina, Myrtle Beach, SC on 8/22-24 and is very much looking forward to attending the event and getting some college baseball exposure. He was also invited to attend the National Blue-Grey Showtime event @ Winter Haven, FL on 8/29-31 but he fears that his fall showcase team’s schedule will not allow him to miss 2 weekends of tournament games during the fall so the B/G Showtime event is probably out for him. Also my son feels that the B/G Classic I @ Wake Forest & Classic IV @ Coastal Carolina have more coaches and colleges concentrating and representing the North & South Carolina areas which is where he plans on concentrating on going to college to play baseball. The B/G Showtime @ Winter Haven seems to be represented by a wider range of coaches and colleges from all over the southeast area as opposed to just the North & South Carolina areas. But, I am thinking that if a high school player has not gotten any exposure at all to college coaches, the B/G Showtime event would be a good start.

Also according to the NCAA, this is the last opportunity for seniors (04) to be seen, as a new recruiting calendar has been established where September 1st will be the last day that Division I Colleges can attend showcases or tournament games until March 15, 2004.

The B/G showcase events do tend to be a little pricey but we feel that the exposure and experience that a player gains from the B/G showcase events are most rewarding and beneficial.

You might want to check into and inquire about the Impact Baseball Senior’s Showcase event @ UNC-Chapel on Sunday, 11/9. Impact Baseball has very good showcase events and is very well attended by college coaches. See impactbaseball.com. My son has participated in the Impact Baseball showcase events as well.

Good luck to your player if you attend and bring back a report for us from the Winter Haven B/G Classic Showtime event.

This can't be correct, then what good would the Impact Senior Showcase be or playing showcase tournaments in the fall be. Hopefully this is a typo!!!!!!

    Thanks

NC04DAD, SabreFan is right. That's exactly what the brochure that my son got said. I agree with you though, if 9/1 is the last day that college coaches can attend tournaments and showcases, there is little need to play fall ball. Something doesn't sound right here........maybe someone else can shed a little light on this.

Maybe we'll just be showcasing for D-II, D-III, and JUCO coaches. And of course pro scouts.

In reference to the recruiting calendar for baseball.

    Close, but not quite.

It is true that a quiet period begins on Sept 1st, but it extends only until Sept 11th. Then it is open contact until November 9th.

Following this open contact, there is a "dead period" where no contact is allowed from November 10th till 13th. This is followed by a "quiet period" that starts November 14th and Extends until March of '04.

In the middle of the extended "quiet period that starts November 14th, there is a dead period from January 2nd through Jan 6th.

A "Quiet Period" means you can't make in-person recruiting contacts off of the campus. You can still attend showcases, but not speak to the athletes while at the showcase. Other forms of communication are allowable. It's the time that most schools schedule their on-campus visits by prospects.

A "Dead Period" bans contact in-person either off or on campus. No provision is made for attending showcase events and it is permissible to phone and write letters to contacts during such a period.

Here is a link to the current baseball recruiting calendar that was released by the NCAA.
