....puts the pressure on the defense, and it puts runners in scoring position. We all know that, .......my question is this.......

what base is easier to steal? 2nd? 3rd? ....and why?

how many outs? what count is best to run?

    I love TBR!

good questions; another if I may:

for HS &/or College ball, are some players "on their own" to steal or does coach always make the call?

    Do the math

From the simple standpoint that the distance from home to second is 88 feet and home to third is 60 feet stealing second is easier. Now the tricky part starts. If the batter shows bunt and the third baseman collapses it creates an opportunity to take third. Shortstop has to cover so if the batter shows bunt then pulls back like she is going into a full swing it'll hold SS in position and possibly create enough hesitation the runner can beat the SS to third.
As for is it the coaches call it should depend on your baserunner. There are some players able to read a situation and take advantage of it without the coaches help. I am sure those who have a high base stealing percentage(safely) are the ones who can quickly determine the situation and take advantage.
I do think younger age groups are able to steal easier than the older ones because the chances of misthrows decrease as they get older. I am sure at the college level every player on the field can make the throw, catch, and tag quicker than even the fastest runners.

....no doubt your post makes sense goodPal. But, rut row, here we go......no just kiddin'......well I will say this, 3B looks like the base to steal, JMO, from what I see. So, if my assumption is correct, (and we all know I'm always correct, lol) then when does the coach pull off a steal to 3B?
Also, ....and I'm holding back on this one in the interest of seeing if anymore TBR users will post what they think,.....but for a teaser, I saw a school control the plate (yes they were at bat), and make basestealing a piece of cake with their approach.

2B was so easy it was pitiful on the defense and 3b was successful pretty much all the time other than a couple of nice playsby the SS.

Anyway, whats good for the game is evolution and raising the bar...........well this gig raises the bar.

    To be continued....

I agree fastpitchndad second should be easier but just as on the roads "Speed Kills" on the base paths also. If your runner can beat the SS to third with an aggressive 3d baseman it would be a sure thing but the key word is IF. Oh and the distance from the apex of home to the center of second base is 84ft 10 1/4 inches. :PubDrink:

I've always found that the easiest base to pick off is first, when there is a runner on second as well. It works well with bases loaded. Runner usually is lazy getting back. You must have catcher with good arm however, or the runner will get hung up while the 3d base runner scores. I've gotten out of an inning more than once doing that. Hope thats "on-topic."
