    Here's the situation:

Runners at first and second, batter hits a grounder to left hand side of third, the third baseman bobbles the ball, recovers, has the ball in her hand, and gets turned around during the recovery, turns and tags third with her glove, but ball in hand before the runner from second reaches third. Is the runner from second out on the force play?

If the ball is hit to the left hand side of third that would be a foul ball.

If it's hit between 2nd and 3rd and the baseman has control of the ball and touches the bag with any part of her body or equipment I believe that would be a force out. Not like the case where the tag on the player is not made with the ball hand.

Sorry, left hand side of the third basemen. I thought the runner should have been called out also, but she wasn't. That's why I posted this. Can anyone reference the rule that might clear this up?

believe that as long as she had control of the ball and its a force out situation, it doesnt matter what part of her body touches the base, she could sit on it and its called an out. tagging the runner with an empty glove is another issue all together.

The above posts are correct. When tagging the bag is required, you can do it with any part of your body, including the foot (which is, incidently, the way it is usually done) or a ponytail. A runner must be tagged with the ball, or the glove containing the ball.

If I had a problem with the rule being misapplied, after lodging my protest, I would instruct my firstbaseman to also tag 1B with the ball when retiring the batter runner for a few outs until the umpire got the message.

I like the way you think JefferMC.

Can anyone point out in a rule book how this is handled?

In the ASA rulebook it says:

Note that the wording is "contacts the base" vs the latter "tags the runner". As if that wasn't enough, "Tag" has a specific rulebook definition
I'm sure the other rulebooks are very similar here.
