1 out, runner on 1st base, 3-2 count on the batter. On the next pitch, the runner takes off on a steal attempt. The pitch is a ball, ball 4. Catcher throws to the SS covering 2nd base on the attempted steal. Runner from 1st base touches 2nd base but overslides the base and is tagged by the SS while off of the base.

You are the umpire responsible for the call. What's it going to be???

In this game, the umpire ruled the runner OUT. The runner was legally able to proceed to 2nd base without liability to be put out. However, once she touched 2nd base and left 2nd base with the ball in play, she has no protection.

    Ump is right!

I learned about this rule just this weekend. A walk is not a dead ball. The runner from first gets a free pass to second but once she reaches second, if she leaves the bag for any reason she is a live runner. If she is tagged while off the base, she is out!
