OK, had a team to try and put the bunt down several times with 2 strikes, all attempts failed, and the batter was out every time. Do you score this as a strikeout? Put out??? Checked the rule book and noting related to this. We scored this as a strikeout, seem to be the most senseable thing to do.

I think you are right - a strikeout

    From: http://www.internationalsoftball.com/english/development/softball_terms.asp

strikeout – scored when: a batter is put out by a third strike caught by the catcher; a batter is put out by a third strike not caught when there is a runner on first before two are out; a batter becomes a runner because a third strike is not caught; a batter bunts a ball into foul territory after two strikes (unless such a bunt results in a fly ball, which is caught by any fielder. This is not considered a strikeout, but a putout by the fielder).

After much searching I did find it in the NFHS softball rules book under Rule 9 Art. 4 - A strikeout is credited to the pitcher when a third strike is delivered to a batter, even though the batter might reach 1st base because the third strike is a wild pitch, or is not caught. It is also a strikeout if an attempted third strike bunt is an uncaught foul.

    Thanks for your help!!

    Bunt third strike foul- B3K
    Dropped third strike D3K
Dropped third strike runner reaches first D3K 2E or D3K 3E depending on who failed on the put out.

Well... it's a PB or WP on the D3K, however, that doesn't totally preclude an E3 if the catcher makes a good throw and the first baseman blows it, or an E2 on a bad throw from the catcher. The PB/WP applies to the fact that the batter became a batter runner instead of someone heading back to the dugout. If the WP/PB goes to the screen and there's no play or the throw was close, but no out then no error.

Also keep in mind that the pitcher still gets the strike out, the catcher loses the putout, but gets a chance on an assist and for a putout by the first baseman.

Thanks jeffr. I guess this is the example of "I'm never wrong, I thought I was once but was mistaken". Please don't tell my wife or kids I think I'm right. They will give multitudenous examples of me being wrong.
I had scored it as DK3 and error on offender, guess I had it right.
