    Qualifying for ASA Nationals

In answer to your question, a team either has to win a National Qualifier, or win their respective state tournament. There is one exception, if the team that wins state has already qualified (by winning a qualifier) then the bid is handed down to the second place team. If the second place team in state has already qualified for nationals, then the 3rd place would receive the bid.

    Hope this helps.

Sounds like you would love to go to the 18U ASA Nationals. Las Vegas is a great venue this year. Although it is going to be hot, hot, hot.

    Good luck!!

FPitch99 is correct. But let me clarify a little further.

To play in the ASA/USA 18U "A" Nationals, a team must win it's state tournament or a qualifier (or have a berth passed down from a previously qualified team). To play in the ASA/USA 18U Gold Nationals, a team must win a qualifying tournament (some qualifiers, A and Gold have 2 or more berths available).

ASA also provides "regional" national tournaments, i.e., Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western, for teams who do not qualify for the "A" Nationals. To participate in a regional national tournament, a team only needs to play in it's state tournament. Teams can select the region that is closest geographically.

For more info along with dates and locations of ASA qualifiers and national tournaments go the the national ASA site www.softball.org

For local NC ASA tournaments, www.ncasafastpitch.com will have that info.

Ways to get to the USA/ASA 18U Championship

    1. The defending ASA/USA Champion gets an automatic berth (if eligible)
    2. The defending ASA/USA Championship Runner-up gets an automatic berth (if eligible)
    3. The top 8 finishers in the Hall of Fame Tournament in OKC recieve a berth
    4. Win a National Qualifier
    5. Regional Berth- 2 berths per region
    6. The previous years Champion and runner-up of an ASA National Tournament (Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western) recieve a berth (see below).
    7. Local Association Championships. These can be Metro or State. Each association recieves at least one berth based on the amount of registered ASA teams for that association. The total number of registered team divided by 500 and round down to the whole number equals the amount of berths. There are no Metro associations in the Carolinas so the State/local Commissioner can hold a State Championship tournament to determine who will recieve those berths.

The pass-down rules still apply. If a qualified team decides not to attend, then the next available team will recieve the berth, but that team must have participated in the regional tournament.

*-The first and second place team in each National Tournament shall receive a berth to the Junior Olympic Girls’ USA / ASA NationalChampionship Finals in the team’s current or succeeding year’s age classification provided the team has five ( 5 ) participating players from the previous year’s roster on the current year’s roster and physically present at the current championship tournament site prior to the start of their first game.

Stingray's information seems to be dead on from what I know.

From what I have witnessed, this question sometimes comes from individuals that do not know the difference between ASA nationals and ASA regional nationals. ex: Eastern nationals, western nationals.

At the end of the season, if you qualify as stated above, you can go the national championship series.
If you play in your state tourney, that automatically qualifies you for the regional tourney that your state is in, at the end of the season.

maybe whoever you spoke to was confused on that issue. at least this is true from 12-16, I am assuming 18 as well.

    Clarify

I think in order for anyone to answer Captain's question, he needs to clarify what classification his team is and then get an answer. 18u GOLD, 18u A, 18u B?

Last year ASA begin allowing teams to participate in the regional National Tournament that was closest to them. Not necessarily the region their state was in. For example, NC is in the southern region, however my team and several others from NC played in the Eastern Nationals in Salem, VA. The 2008 Southern National was in in Ft Worth, TX. Salem is much closer than Ft. Worth!! This was definitely a good move by ASA.

Thanks cheeze- I feel great and have no restrictions (other than diet). Working out almost every day and can't remember feeling better!
