For 2009, NCAA will be adopting pitching lane markings in the circle to denote the boundary for the pitcher. This is an extention of what used to be the imaginary 24" lane extending from the rubber. Will this field marking change trickle down to high school and travel ball?

I know it's hard enough to get fields marked with the correct batter's box size but curious if this might be adopted at the lower levels.

Interesting. The next argument will be when the pitcher walks out, scrubs the line away as she is "preparing" the mound, and what penalty that will involve. If its called, etc (ie slapping/batt box issue again) :smartass2:

    You know its coming.

I know, that didnt answer your question. just a random thought.

Since the lines are in front of the pitcher's plate (i.e. in the zone), they will be obliterated by the end of the first inning. I guess they did that so if the foot is entirely outside the chalk, the pitcher would be in violation and because it makes it similar to the ruling on the batter's box and the foul lines (which should really be called the fair lines, but I digress).

I would have made the chalk line start at the edge of the pitcher's plate and the foot would have to have been entirely on or past the line to be in violation. That way it would have lasted a few more innings of legal landings (though nearly all the foot could be on it and the landing still be legal).

We'll see if this actually makes any contribution to the college level game. If, by some miracle, it does, then maybe it will show up elsewhere. I currently expect that they'll fade away in a year or two.
