2009 Providence HS and South Charlotte Panther outfielder Tyler Zupcic verbally committed to the Mountaineers today! Tyler had an outstanding Junior season and was named to the SW 4A All Conference team; NC Region 6 State Games team; South Charlotte Sports Reporter Team and Charlotte Observer Second Team. Congratulations Tyler and family!!!

P.S. Thats two outstanding players for App this week in Stetson and Zupcic. Speed, speed, speed, and more speed plus great bats. They also played together when they were 12. Pretty neat stuff.

    Congrats!!!

Its always great to hear about a young man getting an opportunity like this. I am sure there have been many years of hard work and dedication that led to this. App State continues to recruit very well in state. It should start paying off bigtime for them. They had a very good 07 and 08 class. With the guys they are getting in the 09 class I would not be surprised to see ASU really take off in the near future.

If they can get some pitchers it just might put them over the top in that conference in the next 2 years.

    Congrats Zuppie

Congratulations to Tyler Zupcic and family. Appalachian State has added two very good '09 outfielders in the past week. I believe they also got a verbal from Randy Sheperd who is an outstanding '09 pitcher. Good Luck guys!

I am extremely happy for Tyler and his family. Wow....there won't be many balls not caught between he and Ryan Stetson. Both those guys can go after it.

What makes Tyler so special is his baseball IQ. The kid simply knows how to play the game....and he is fun to watch while doing it. You've heard the term outfielders "gliding" towards the ball...that's Zupcic. He's smoother than peanut butter. I know of a lot of HC's across the state cursing right about now hearing of this signing. Congratulations Coach Pollard...your Charlotte pipeline is still intact!

He should. In the past, App St was considered a pitcher's purgatory. No one really wanted to go there. They played their first 20 games on the road because of the weather. If they broke even for the season, it was considered a great year. Pitchers hated it because all of your initial games being on the road and the one's at home in late March could still be snowed out.

Coach Pollard has been able to overcome this obstacle and has recruited some sensational pitchers; Garrett Sherrill, Aubrey Edens, Jason Rook and Matt Andress to name a few. Two of whom were drafted and at least one more will be. I'd watch for Nick Daniels to have a sensational year, too.

The fact that the wind blows out, you play on a rug where a lot of ground balls get through and you're at 4-5k feet where the ball flies. Tough place for a pitcher. I would think you gotta be thick-skinned.

    They have some pitching

but that has been the problem in years past. It appears they now have the quality pitching depth to make a move in their conference. I would expect the weather has alot to do with pitchers not wanting to go there. And yes the ball does seem to fly out of that park. But they are doing a great job of recruiting and I really believe they are going to have a tremendous season next spring. The posistion players they are getting are outstanding. They are going to hit and play defense no doubt. If the arms hold up they will be very good next year and I believe they will.
