    Middle IF's with masks?

    Is this what I see in some of these pictures? I can see the pitcher and maybe the 3B wearing a mask but are middle infielders now wearing them? Seems a bit extreme. I know bad hops happen but for a MI it seems a quality mouthpiece should suffice. I really think that having six of nine defenders wearing masks is sending the wrong message and, in fact, will just drive more girls to s*&&@#.

    and just what wrong message would that be? if all the girls want to wear mask that should be no concern of yours, dont forget its the girls playing, not you. dont know about you but im in it for the young ladies, unlike some of the coaches out there!!!!!!

    I'm just not sure

    I received a PM from a person who played a 12U team that all nine defensive players wore masks. Maybe this was done to make the pitcher and corners feel less self-conscious about wearing masks. It may surprise you to know that I've long supported MANDATORY masks for batters, especially in school ball where you often get unskilled and poorly coached players batting against pitchers who may throw pretty hard. There's far more risk in batting than playing defense, except, perhaps for the pitcher.

    Maybe some day softball will be like LAX and everyone will wear a helmet all the time. No one can argue it wouldn't make the game safer and there would be far less time spent styling hair and choosing which bow to wear.
