I took my 6 year old son to Five County Stadium on Friday to see the 3A Championship Game and the 4A Championship Game. We arrived just as the first pitch was thrown for the East Rowan versus Rocky Mount affair. After the first game, we made our way from our seats after all the fans emptied out, down to the front row behind home plate. I had seen Greenville Rose play 3 times this year, but had yet to see Ardrey Kell. We got to see both teams take infield, which was an incredible learning experience for a 6 year old and his dad. Both teams were so crisp and so organized for high school teams. Rose was a machine, considering they had 33 players on the field. They were 3 deep at every position. When Ardrey Kell took infield, the entire Rose team stood in a line along the first base line, and observed. They were so diciplined and so focused on the task at hand. I guess this is why they are vying for their 6th state championship, a credit to Coach Vincent.

On Sunday, I had talked to Coach Hightower at East Rowan and told him I was bringing my son to the games this weekend. I live in Raleigh and rarely get a chance to see East play during the season. He told me he would like to send me a hat for my son to wear to the game. The hat arrived to my son's excitement on Thursday. Tonight on the way home, we stopped at Knightdale Seafood and Barbque, because apparently a hotdog and icecream at the game wasn't enough to satisfy a 6 year old appetite, and the Mustang baseball team was there eating as well. We walked in, my son wearing his newly aquired hat, and were greeted by several Mustang players as they sat and ate. You would have never know they had just lost an opening game of the state championship series. The players greeted my son making comments about his hat that put a wide grin on his face. Some of the players took time to talk to him about his baseball team and the game that they had just played in. Each player was so polite and kind to me and my son even coming up to us to say goodbye as they left. Coach Hightower eventually came in and spoke to us for a short while as well.

I was truely impressed by all of the young men I came in contact with today and with the quality of the baseball that is being played in the state at this time. Good luck to all teams tomorrow.
