I was watching some news channel last night and saw a discussion on flat oil productions, lack of gas refineries, no real commitment to alternative fuels and forecasts of gas prices reaching double digits in the near future.

My question is when do the school systems say enough is enough; "We can no longer afford activity buses". And if this happens what happens next?

The purpose of this thread is to gather ideas to be proactive. I'm curious what the ideas may be.

They're kicking around the concept of a 4 day school week in our area. I doubt that could happen due to child care issues. But things have to change somehow. Sports are certainly a lower priority (in the grand scheme of things).

I'm afraid you are right and I believe the decisions made will be based on that

    my guess

Some changes I can imagine happening

Travel limitations for football, only a certain number of players can go

Cheerleaders maybe not going to away games

School systems limiting nonconference games, or limiting you to a certain distance restriction

I think we might see as well is a rise in intramural athletics at our schools. Obviously this could be much easier at the bigger schools, but i think we might see jv sports tailing off, probably starting with the non-revenue sports first.

I don't necesarily agree with all these things, but I could see them happening.

    I predict:

    - In many school districts, boosters will offer to pick up the slack. But their assistance will be rejected because some districts don't have that luxury of fan support. So cut-backs will be applied 'across the board'.

    - Minor sports will be threatened...since they are not income producers. That will raise the ire of a few isolated parents & will be the headline story on local TV & newspapers.

I feel this will be the trend.

My son attends a private school and we do not use our activity bus but on rare occasions. Parents sign up to drive and the kids with licenses can drive as well. You have to sign releases to allow your child to ride with someone else. It works for us and alot of pirvate schools do the same. We do not play football (at least not the american version) but I can see it being a problem for that sport.

At my high school, buses were not provided for city games. Only if we traveled out of city (and those were playoff games)

    must be nice

our shortest conference game is 45 minutes away, but we normally travel at least an hour

at my old school our shortest trip was an hour and some change that included a ferry ride
