While the last bastions of winter attempt to hold on, high school opening day signals that spring is near and the sweet essence of warm soft breezes, fresh cut grass, and the waff of red hots cooking on the grill will fill ball fields across the state for the next couple of months.

Sure MLB opening day is a kin to a groundhog on a sunny day in early February, six weeks of winter away. Unfortunately, the scandals and congressional hearings are not that accompany MLB. But the high school season take us away from all the auxiliary baggage of juice, luxury tax and agents leaving just hits, runs and errors.

It has been 267 days since the last ball was safely secured, leading to joyous on field celebrations and the crowing of the new state champion. Unlike the marathon that is the major league season, the school season takes as long as Christmas to arrive and is gone faster than a shooting star, especially for a senior and even faster for a his parents.

The opener is unlike any other game played. It is not like the battle for a league title, that like a game itself, builds to a crescendo throughout the season. And it is not like the intensity of the playoffs. No, the opener is more undemanding, yet it has its own special anxiety.

Everyone wants to get off to a good start. It is a chance to show off the hard work put in over the off season, the hope of a new beginning, the start of a special season; for you can not win them all if you do not win the first one.

So let the games begin. Christmas is here. The crack of the bat initiates another new season. Make that a ping.

    Favorite day of the Year

I have looked forward to opening day every year of my life weather it was following my favorite pro team, my son's little league teams or school ball teams. It is always a special day and an anxious night before. Tomorrow the butterfly's will be back in my stomach as I am behind the plate for the opening pitch of the Varsity season. (Southwest at Beddingfield)

What a great day each and every year plus a lot of warm days ahead. Good luck to all the teams and all the players.

I know I'm fired up. Win, lose, or draw, it's time for baseball.
