I still believe many people are very confused with this legislation. It is unbelievably absurd, yet very typical of the NCAA's and their decision making. There are so many things wrong with this, but now they are forcing an eligible drafted student to declare his intentions before he can make an informed decision....plus losing one of his few leaverages in negotiations. I'm sure the MLB teams are deliriously happy in this decision.

    Wow....just wow!!!!

If you read much about these changes its apparent there will be a major effect on 2008 and 2009 recruiting classes. The movement of all the excess players on current college rosters between now and January 1st will be immense.

    Braves,
I'm not sure I understand this point. Can you elaborate?

    This one?

"It could also be good for major league teams, who will have more leverage in the draft next summer because colleges will be forced to tell their drafted players to either sign or else lose their roster spots"

The players will be forced to commit one way or another before negotiations even begin...I see this as being a huge problem. But this is just one of many concerns with this legislation.

At the very least, the legislation should allow for a longer phase in period. If the new rules begin with the '08 grads, then every class in front of them should be allowed to finish without punishment. I'm sure lots of the so called lower level D1 schools are happy with some of this, but it puts a lot of coaching staffs in terrible positions with their kids. It also leaves less room for kids to walk on at schools at which they otherwise would not be asked to play.

Im completely confused here. What is the purpose of this legislation? I really don't get it.

When you couple the word purpose with NCAA it will always = confusion.

What I don't understand is that the majority of college coaches don't like this rule, but it will be passed, regardless. Supposedly the purpose was to focus more attention to the "student" part of student athlete, but college baseball has one of the highest APR's & GPA's of all sports.

The days of "walk-ons" and "book money" are virtually over, but DII schools will really benefit from this new rule. DII's will now become even stronger because players will not have to sit out a year for transferring.
