Hear-Hear...you get my vote. Metal bats should be outlawed. The theory that wooden bats are too expensive is hogwash. But, you do have to teach them how to correctly hold the bat.

When safety should mitigate any reason for using a metal bat, then there shouldn't be a question...and as Coach has stated, it has cheapen the game.

My son has been 'ranked' among the NCAA D2 leaders for getting HBP the past 2 seasons. He's made an art of it for years. (He also has no feeling on the backside of his left bicep).

FYI This past season one of the umpire points of emphasis was enforcing the 'attempt to get out of the way' rule. Ty was put back in the box about half dozen times.

My opinion: umpires who expand the strike zone 6 inches outside have forced batters to 'dive' into the pitch. Restore that rule first.

    noteworthy stat

it is a pretty ridiculous stat that there have been 37 hbp's in this college world series; in 10 games , that is 3 -4 times a game!!

What is the stat on the number of pitches off the outside corner that have been called a strike? I'll say it again: Fix that problem first & the batters won't have to crowd the plate & dive in to cover the expanded strike zone.

    HBP.....

I don't have a problem with guys diving into the plate to get to a outside pitch, but most of these guys in the CWS aren't diving to cover, they are leaning to get hit. It doesn't seem like the majority of guys getting hit are 3,4,5 hitters looking to pull outside pitches out of the park. Seems more like they are 1,2,8,9 hitters leaning to find a way on.

Alot of valid points here and this is just my opinion.

Pitchers have to pitch inside to make the outside more effective, as a pitcher you don't have to hit someone to make your point, hit someone in the thigh or hip doesn't really hurt, but miss a couple times up and in, while not hitting them will gain you more ground on the plate in my opinion. Everyone will take it on the hip, but most will bail on the up and in.

These hbp's were unavoidable. One just above the ankle, one on the butt and one on the inside arm. The were more like a wild pitch.

There was also a Rice player that got hit and was called back for not making an attempt to avoid. Good for the ump!!

I peronally would like to see the umps police this a little better. This is not baseball!!

Use wood bats. They can't get around. It will take that "6-12 inch off the plate called strike" away. Then the correct strike zone will again be called. Players will back off the plate.

This is my second post TODAY on wood bats.

All should use wood bats. Aluminum/Composite bats should be outlawed at all levels of play.

Might as well not sit on the fence on the wood/metal bat argument.

Now about the player attempting to get out of the way. Call it UMPS!!!
