    explain this...scorekeeping log

tenn. vs. uga, runner on first, batter spanks one back to the pitcher, pitcher barely mishandles the ball and then throws a tad bit late to first. how, mr. score guru would you call this one?................not for nothing but the official score put in the book was an error AND a sac....what? trust me on this one. scorekeeping should be a level playing field across the board. play safe

If the pitcher is considered a position player and the ball is hit to the pitcher hard and she mishandles it and the runner beats the throw out I would score it a hit...now if the ball is hit to the pitcher and she fields it clean and throws the ball in the dirt or over the head of the first baseman it would be E1..Don't understand how it can be an error and a SAC...But I'll get back to you..The GURU must check his crystal ball on that one...

What's all the hoop-la here about stats. In HS/TB, stats should mean absolutely nothing to anyone outside the fence. They are useless except for the coaches to compare batters WITHIN THE TEAM for batting order purposes. Who cares if the scorekeepers have DD batting .200 on her HS team while batting .600 on her TB team. Its only relative WITHIN THE TEAM. Colleges put little or no credence in HS/TB stats.

It's also a sac because if the error didn't occur, the batter-runner would have been out...that is, assuming the play advanced a runner. The sac means the batter isn't charged with an AB and therefore her batting average isn't affected.

only two rules to follow IMO.
    # 1 Know the rules
    # 2 Treat every play the same if your team is batting or in the field

perfect example to reply to original thread.

this is perfect! if a scorekeeper has an ounce of sense of the game and its quirks so to speak, then he/she would score a hit PERIOD concerning your 3b to 1b ? was the 3b looking bunt or playing in or tie game, bottom of the 9th, 2 outs playing back.....either someone "knows" or doesn't "know". there in lies the problem. as for the unequal playing field in the world of scorekeeping, there is absolutely NO substitute for shear knowledge of the game. be fair and consistent is all we can hope for. great thread. play safe.
