    MARS HILL, NC- The Belmont Abbey baseball team earned a 12-5 win at Mars Hill College this afternoon for its second-consecutive win. MHC falls to 9-23 on the season while the Crusaders improved to 20-12.

    The Lions scored two in the first, but BAC cut the lead to 2-1 in the second frame when Alex Castellanos scored on a Lion error. Castellanos reached base by hitting a double.

    After Castellanos singled to center field to lead off the fourth inning, shortstop Josh Haire hit ripped a homer over the center field fence to give the Crusaders a 3-2 advantage.

    Austin Boehme tied the contest at three in the bottom half of the fourth when scored on a single by David DeSilva.

    DeSilva broke the 3-3 tie by hitting a sacrifice fly to right field to send Matt Carter across the plate. Carter reached base after getting hit by a pitch.

    The Abbey answered by taking a 6-4 lead in the seventh inning after it scored three runs on four hits, highlighted by a homerun by Seth Waller.

    After hitting a two-out double to center, Wassum trimmed the deficit to 6-5 when Danny Miller singled to left field.

    Alex Udwari extended the Crusader’s advantage to 7-5 in the ninth inning by hitting a lead-off homer down the right field line. The Crusaders added five more insurance runs in the inning on four hits and two Lion errors to make the final tally, 12-5.

    Jason Kennel was charged with the loss as he fell to 0-3. Andrew Morton earned the win after allowing one run on three hits in two innings of work. He struck out four and did not issue a walk.

    Haire led BAC with four RBI while Tyler McKenzie and Castellanos each recorded three hits.

    Yes he is. Great kid too. He has been a real work horse for the Catamounts. You can definately tell he has the genes. Throws about a mid 80s FB and decient CB, but his main pitch appears to be a "palm ball", almost looks like a slow pitched softball. There have been very few hit solid....mostly pop-ups and ground balls off the end of the bat. Guys fall all over themselves trying to hit it. Very effective behind the FB but his biggest asset is the ability to throw all 3 pitches with very good command. Just about all the dammage done against him has been done on the FB. You can look at his ERA and tell that it isn't much. 1.83 ERA, 7 ER in 34.1 innings with only 4 BB. Not to bad against aluminum bats.......but it's early yet......

    Davidson wins over Princeton 7-6 on a walkoff grandslam by Greg Zage. The Cats trailed 6-2 heading to the bottom of the ninth but took advantage of four walks to set up the Zage heroics. Good win for Davidson after losing Tuesday to the same team 19-8.

    On Wednesday Charlotte beat NC A&T 16-6. Charlotte is now 17-4 and headed to their first conference series this weekend at St. Louis. They are starting to get some votes in the rankings.

    GREENWOOD, SC-The Belmont Abbey baseball team pounded out 20 hits Wednesday night to take a 9-3 non-conference victory against Lander at Legion Field. Belmont Abbey, winners of three-straight, improves to 21-12 overall, while Lander drops to 10-20.

    The Crusaders' Evan Jonas (4-2) picked up the win as he struck out seven and allowed three runs on five hits. Lander's Derek Wilson (0-6) took the loss as he struck out one and allowed four earned runs on six hits in one inning pitched.

    Belmont Abbey took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning when Patrick Atwell, Alex Udwari and Will Breslin all singled to load the bases. Seth Waller's RBI double down the left field line scored Atwell and Udwari, then Breslin made it 3-0 on Josh Haire's RBI single to center field.

    Lander cut the margin to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning when Jesse Barbaro blasted a solo home run over the right field fence.

    The Crusaders stretched the lead to 4-1 in the second when Nick Popp singled then scored on Tyler McKenzie's double to deep right center field. Belmont Abbey added one more run in the fifth when Breslin doubled to centerfield, advanced to third on a ground out, then scored on Alex Castellanos' groundout to second.

    Lander made it 5-3 in the fourth. Barbaro singled to right field, advanced to second on T.J. Guinan's single to center field then both scored on Hunter Ruoss's double to centerfield.

    Belmont Abbey took a 9-3 lead in the eighth as Breslin stroked a two-RBI double to left field and Seth Waller belted a two-run homer over the left field fence.

    The Crusaders added their final two runs in the ninth. Kyle Smith walked, advanced to second on Atwell's walk, to third on McKenzie's fielder's choice and scored on Udwari's single to left field. Udwari and McKenzie advanced to second and third respectively on a passed ball, then McKenzie scored on a wild pitch.

    For Lander, Barbaro went 3-for-4 and McLeod went 2-for-4.

    For Belmont Abbey, Waller went 2-for-4 with one homer and one double, Breslin went 4-for-5 with two doubles and McKenzie went 3-for-6 with one double.

    BELMONT, NC- Belmont Abbey freshman second baseman Alex Castellanos finished with four hits in five at bats, including a pair of doubles and a home run, as the Crusaders earned their fourth-straight win with a 14-9 triumph over Erskine this afternoon. The Abbey improves to 22-12 overall and 11-5 in the CVAC, while the Flying Fleet falls to 21-12 overall and 8-8 in the CVAC.

    The Crusaders finished with 18 hits as seven of the nine starters collected at least two hits. Along with Castellanos, first baseman Will Breslin finished 3-5 with a home run, and righfielder Alex Udwari was among five Crusaders to finish with two hits, as he also recorded a homer.

    The Abbey scored an unearned run in the first, but Erskine erased that with a pair in the second to grab a 2-1 lead. Belmont Abbey immediately tied the game at two in its half of the second on an infield single by Nick Popp that plated Castellanos.

    Belmont Abbey took the lead for good in the third by scoring two runs, the first coming on a double to left by Castellanos, scoring Breslin to give the Abbey a lead it would never relinquish. Shortstop Josh Haire pushed the lead to two runs with a single that plated Castellanos.

    The Abbey blew the game wide open in the fifth, scoring seven runs as it sent ten men to the plate. Tyler McKenzie drove in the first two runs with a single to left, followed by a run scoring singles to right by Udwari and Breslin on consecutive at bats. After a groundout, Castellanos launched his team leading 13th homer of the year over the wall in left, to widen the Crusaders advantage to 14-2.

    Erskine scored one more in the seventh and eighth, and added five more in the ninth, but the Abbey held on for the win.

    Andy Helms improved his record to 5-2 in the win, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 14 hits in eight and one-thirds innings. He struck out five. Andrew Guest was charged with the loss. He allowed 14 runs, 13 earned, on 16 hits in five innings of work.

    The two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 with a doubleheader.

    Cats Win Another SOCON Series

    Davidson won its second straight conference series two games to one over UNC-Greensboro. They won 6-10Friday night behind Rob Wilson's strongest outing of the year. After getting pounded 14-2 Saturday, the Cats rallied to win 5-4 on Sunday behind a great start by freshman lefty Thomas Middour and lights out relief pitching. The team is now 15-10, 4-2 in conference. It is the best conference start for the team since 1993.
