WOW, great win for WCU and the SOCON. Davidson lost a shootout to Yale 18-13. The teams combined for 41 hits. Cats have now lost 5 of 7. Seems that the games the team scores runs it gets no pitching and when it gets pitching the offense goes dead. Hopefully just a tough stretch and the guys will get if figured out.

    Belmont Abbey............7
    Barton College........12

BELMONT, NC- The Belmont Abbey baseball team split a CVAC doubleheader with visiting Barton College this afternoon at Abbey Yard, outlasting the Bulldogs 17-12 in the opener before falling 12-7 in the second game. The Crusaders are now 18-12 overall and 9-5 in the CVAC, while Barton is 17-17 overall and 7-6 in the CVAC.

The first game was an offensive explosion, as the two teams combined for 29 runs on 33 hits. Barton jumped ahead 3-0 in the top of the first, before the Crusaders tied the game with three in their half of the third. Barton regained the lead in the fourth, taking advantage of an Abbey error to score four times to surge ahead 7-3.

Belmont Abbey responded in kind in its half of the inning, scoring four times, two coming on the first of three Will Breslin homers of the day, to tie the game at seven. The Bulldogs scored twice more in the fifth to grab a 9-7 lead, but the Crusaders chipped away at the lead, scoring once in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by catcher Josh Cable that scored senior shortstop Josh Haire, who ripped a one out single.

Trailing 9-8, Abbey second baseman Alex Castellanos gave the Crusaders the lead for good in the sixth, as he clubbed a three-run shot to dead center to give the Abbey an 11-8 lead. Barton would score two in the seventh and one in the eighth, but the Abbey negated that with three in its half of the seventh, using an RBI single by leftfielder Tyler McKenzie and a two-run homer by rightfielder Alex Udwari. The Crusaders added three more in the eighth to push the advantage to 17-12, which was the final.

Andrew Morton earned the win after holding Barton to three runs on three hits in three innings of relief of starter Andy Helms. Morton fanned three and walked one. Barton starter Chris Hill was charged with the loss after yielding 10 runs, nine earned, on 11 hits in five and two-thirds innings of work. He fanned three and walked a pair.

The second game started out as a pitchers duel, as neither team produced a run until Barton would take a lead it would never lose with a run in the third, getting an RBI single by Jonathan Nichols that scored shortstop Zach Boyette.

The Bulldogs would add single runs in the fourth and fifth, and plated four more in the sixth to open up a 7-0 advantage, before the Abbey would make it a game by scoring five times in the fifth, four coming on a Breslin grand slam to cut the lead to 7-5. Barton would respond in kind, exploding four five runs in the top of the seventh (and last) inning to build a 12-7 lead. The Abbey would get two more in the bottom half on a two-run shot by Breslin.

Breslin finished the contest 2-6, driving in six of the Abbey’s seven runs, and scored twice. Udwari finished 2-3 with a pair of runs scored.

Brandon Brinson earned the win after allowing five runs on six hits in five innings of work. Jimmy Metzinger was credited with the save after entering the game with the tying run on deck in the fifth. He worked the final two innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Jason Cline was charged with the loss. He allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in five innings. He walked four and struck out four.

    Belmont Abbey........13
    Barton College............10

BELMONT, NC- Trailing 8-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Belmont Abbey baseball team scored seven runs on seven hits, sending 13 men to the plate, and the Crusaders held off a ninth inning Barton rally as they won the series with a 13-10 win over the Bulldogs this afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Abbey improves to 19-12 overall and 10-5 in the CVAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 17-18 overall and 7-7 in the CVAC.

Barton scored the first six runs of the contest, getting three in the first, two in the second and one in the fifth to open up its lead. The Abbey got on the board in the fifth with two runs, as shortstop Josh Haire singled home Alex Castellanos, who had stopped at third on the play, until the Barton leftfielder bobbled the ball, allowing Castellanos to score. Later, leftfielder Tyler McKenzie singled home Haire to close the Bulldogs lead to 6-2.

Barton pushed the lead to 8-2 with two unearned runs in the sixth, but it would not score again until the ninth as the Abbey offense came to life. Castellanos trimmed the lead in half to 8-4 with a two-run homer in the sixth, his team leading 12th homer of the year, and rightfielder Alex Udwari closed it to two with a two run shot to right in the seventh.

After a scoreless top of the eighth for Barton, the Crusaders took the lead for good as they exploded for seven runs on seven hits, and took advantage of a Barton error. Seth Waller led off with a single. After a Castellanos popout, Haire tied the game at eight with a towering homer to left center.

A walk to Nick Popp and a pitching change followed, and pinch hitter Danny O’Brien kept the inning going with a grounder to first baseman Kevin Brosseau, who flipped to pitcher Jay Metzinger. Metzinger dropped the ball, allowing O’Brien to reach safely. Spencer Sobol entered the game to pinch run for O’Brien, and he would move to second when Metzinger plunked Patrick Atwell on the first pitch to load the bases. McKenzie, Udwari and Will Breslin, Waller and Castellanos all followed with singles, all but Castellanos driving in runs, as the Abbey grabbed a 13-8 lead. The Abbey scored 11 unanswered runs to grab the lead.

In the top of the ninth, reliever Trey Summerlin set down the first batter on a fly ball, but then hit a batter and allowed a single. Brosseau brought both men home with a double to left center to cut the lead to 13-10, but Summerlin ended the game with a groundout and a strikeout to preserve the win.

Abbey reliever Brett DiPasquale earned his second win of the week, as he allowed just two unearned runs on one hit in three innings of work. He fanned three and walked a pair. Brent Godwin, the second of four Bulldog pitchers, was charged with the loss. He allowed five runs on three hits in an inning and a third.

The two teams combined for 24 hits as the Abbey finished with 14. Castellanos finished 4-5 with two doubles and a home run. He drove in two and scored twice. McKenzie, Udwari, Breslin, Waller and Haire all finished with a pair of hits. Udwari drove in three.
