    Tough Day for Davidson

Talk about two tough losses. Davidson falls 1-0 in extra innings then gives up a game-tying HR with two out its the bottom of the ninth and falls again in extra innings. The team got great pitching but didn't get the bats going and falls to 10-5 on the season.

    USC Upstate.............2

BELMONT, NC- Belmont Abbey sophomore pitcher Brett DiPasquale held USC Upstate to one run over eight innings, striking out six, and the Crusaders offense pounded out 13 hits as they extended its winning streak to two with an 8-2 win this afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Abbey improves to 16-10, while the Spartans fall to 15-11.

DiPasquale ups his record to 3-0 after scattering eight hits and surrendering one run in a 111 pitch effort. Tyler Oliver was charged with the loss after yielding five runs on six hits in just an inning and two-thirds.

The Crusaders never trailed in the contest as they scored five times in the second inning. Designated hitter Seth Waller led off with a single to center, moved to third on a double by Alex Castellanos, and both men scored on shortstop Josh Haire’s double to the wall in left center.

Third baseman Nick Popp followed with a single and catcher Josh Cable was hit by a pitch. After a strikeout, both men moved up one base on a passed ball, and leftfielder Tyler McKenzie plated Popp with a sacrifice fly. Rightfielder Alex Udwari stretched the lead to 5-0 with a run scoring single to right center that scored Cable.

The lead grew to 6-0 in the fifth as Haire tripled home Castellanos, who had singled earlier in the frame. In the sixth, the Crusaders tacked on two more on RBI singles by McKenzie and Waller.

USC Upstate broke up the shutout in the eighth with a run, and it tacked on another in the ninth, but the Crusaders would win, 8-2.

Castellanos led the Abbey with three hits in four at bats and scored two runs. McKenzie, Waller and Haire all had two hits apiece, with Haire driving in three runs.

The Crusaders are back in action Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. when they host Carson-Newman in a doubleheader.

The final game of the series gets underway Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m.

    Carson - Newman.......4

BELMONT, NC- The Belmont Abbey baseball team split a doubleheader with Carson-Newman at the Abbey Yard this afternoon, dropping the opener 8-5 before winning the nightcap 5-4. The Crusaders are now 17-11, and the Eagles are now 18-8.

In game one, the Crusaders scored five unanswered runs, opening the scoring in the first on a three-run homer by Seth Waller.

The lead grew to 5-0 in the second after scoring two runs. Shortstop Josh Haire led off with a double, and after a popout, catcher Kyle Smith drove him in with a double to left center. After a pitching change and a walk, leftfielder Tyler McKenzie singled home Smith to widen the gap to 5-0.

Carson-Newman would get on the board in the third, scoring four runs, the big blow coming on a two-run homer by Nick Achberger. The Eagles would add one more in the fourth on an RBI single by Brandon Burchfield to tie the game at five.

The Eagles took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh to seal an 8-5 win. Michael Elliott, the second of five Eagles pitchers, earned the win after holding the Abbey scoreless in two and two-thirds innings. He allowed four hits and struck out three. Andrew Morton was charged with the loss as he allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits in four innings. Mark Carroll earned the save.

In the nightcap, the Abbey took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by third baseman Nick Popp, scoring Waller, who ripped a one-out single to center.

The Eagles answered right back with a run of their own in the third, but the Crusaders negated that with a run in its half of the frame, when Haire was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Abbey a 2-1 lead.

The two schools would again trade runs in the fifth, as the Abbey took a 4-2 lead in the fifth on a two-run blast by Will Breslin. C-N would again rally to tie the score in the sixth after scoring two runs.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Abbey stormed ahead for good. With two outs and the bases loaded, Eagles reliever Corbin Arial ucorked a wild pitch, allowing McKenzie to score the winning run.

Trey Summerlin earned the win after working the final two innings, holding C-N scoreless. He entered the game in relief of Michael Rue, who fashioned a no-hitter through the first four and one-thirds innings. Rue and Summerlin combined to hold the Eagles to four hits. Arial took the loss after yielding two runs on two hits in two innings of work, striking out one and walking three.
