Robert Woodard took a perfect game into the seventh inning as the Tar Heels rolled to an 11-0 win over Seton Hall in the opener. Drew Poulk homered in his first collegiate at bat along with a single, and Dustin Ackley ripped two doubles in his debut. Poulk was starting in place of injured CF, Mike Cavasini who took a ball to the eye bunting in practice. Ackley replaced a banged up Seth Williams in RF.
Shelton, Horton, Fronk & Fedex also had two hits apiece.
Woodard used mostly mid-eighties fastballs topping out at 87 in route to his 24th career win, with only 3 losses. He is only seven wins shy of UNC's career record.

Amazing...way to go Robert. A 1 hitter...his nickname is "Money". I was saddened to hear what happened to Cavi, but it shows how talented UNC is that they can start a true freshman in his place and Drew Poulk's very first collegiate at bat...bam...gone yard! Welcome to college Drew. See, it's a piece of cake :newsmile37:

It appears that everyone contributed in this win. What a great start!

Oh...and my boy Sheltie had 2 hits. Got to single him out.

Not that Drew Poulk's first-college-at-bat requires anything more to be considered exceptional, it's still worth noting that his and Benji Johnson's homers came against a pitcher who gave up ZERO home runs in 80.2 innings last season!! Dan Merklinger, a Cape Cod League All-Star last summer, is one of the best lefties the Tar Heels will face all season.

Yes...but the best description I heard about the game came from a Cardinals scout. "It was an old fashioned bird flippin'". What a simple summary, but oh so accurate.

considering I don't know very much, if I say anything it's pretty much everything.

But, having said that, I could not put it more succinctly than the scout.

Today was Freshmen Day at Carolina as Alex White and Kyle Seager led their team to a 3-2 win today.

Alex pitched 6 innings of scoreless ball while striking out 5 batters

Good to see Ackley doing good again today going 1-3. He may have went to South, but we don't get very many kids to cheer for coming out of Stokes County.

man look at all these freshmen

NORTH CAROLINA freshmen no less leading the Heels. I just love seeing all these kids from around here playing big time college ball.

and it's nice being able to root for Alex White now after rooting against him last JUne

    3-0

Luke Putkonen tossed a 5 inning, 2 hit shutout in the 13-2 win and series sweep over Seton Hall. Chad Flack drove in 4 and Fronk scored 4, but what about the fabulous frosh ?
Drew Poulk hit his second HR, Ackley was 3-5, Seager had two hits and Graepel collected his first hit. Coach Fox reportedly went thru two pencils as 23 different UNC players saw action in the game. I love that !
Since Clemson lost on Saturday and USC on Sunday, so UNC figures to move up to #1 in this week's national polls.
