too bad to practice outside? too cold? too wet? too windy? i know football has to be very careful in hot weather but what does baseball do in extreme cold? what about the chances of getting your team sick by practicing in bad weather? at what point does it become counterproductive. remember feb in nc is still the middle of winter weather.

considering basic first aid courses will tell you that when cold, the blood is pulled to the core of the body to keep the core warm, it would seem logical that athletes should not be out on cold, windy days trying to practice and train.....

32 degrees with the wind blowing 25-30 - well, indoor workouts would seem to be the ticket.....

Only from contact with germs, viruses, etc. - not the cold weather. That being said, it ain't no fun playing in the cold!

so you're saying that if you get wet and cold that will not cause you to get sick? i always thought that when you get cold and wet that you usually end up sick.

    sick

I'm no doctor, but my doctor did tell me that cold won't make you sick. Running around with no hat, wet head, short sleeves in COLD temps, won't do anything except make you cold. Just a wive's tale, like you can't swim for 30 minutes after eating or you will get cramps.

However, that being said, I think you do have to be careful with young men and their arms when it is so cold. Hard to get loose and stay loose while you stand around during practice.

Dress in layers and makes it more bearable. Silk underwear, coldgear, 2 pairs of socks, toboggan. Along with baseball uniform.

IMHO, while running around in the cold might not be the "reason" one could get sick, being out in raw weather (rain, cold, sleet, wind, whatever) makes your body work harder to stay warm. When your body works harder, more energy is spent, taking the "defense" level down, and allowing the germs that are "lurking" around out there a way into your body.

Staying hydrated (which you don't feel like doing when it's cold), keeping your head warm (the place where most of the heat escapes the body), getting the right amount of rest will help from getting sick. But being out in the extreme cold, throwing long toss, or running sprints seems like an invitation for injury. Its too hard to try and keep the body consistently warm. Have heard a lot of horror stories about kids who went to this showcase or played in that game when the weather was too cold and damp that ended up with injuries...

Just curious - what do the college teams in the moutains do for practice when it's so cold?

What he said! Research has proven that being cold will not make you sick. What makes you sick is the germs that your immune system does not fight off. You come in contact with germs every day and most times your immune system attacks them and kills them before they multiply suficiently to make you sick. However, research has also shown that if you get cold, your immune system is stressed and it isn't able to function as efficiently. Therefore, you catch more colds and other illnesses. So the old wives tale is partly true and it is wise to take care of yourself in harsh weather, particularly when you are around large groups of people - like baseball teams.
