I was looking at the NCHSAA records and see that in 1977, Sylva-Wester was 23-1 with Steve Streater being credited with all 23 wins, including 12 shoutouts.

Was hoping maybe some long time WNC observer could shed some more light about that team, season.

Streater is also listed as the NC career wins record holder with 61.

He also pitched 165 innings that season, meaning that if no games went to extra innings he pitched all but one out!

    Little info

Steve Streater pitched every game that year for Sylva Webster. I believe going into the state final game, he was 23-0, and lost the last one he pitched. 23 wins was a national single season record, don't know if it still is or not. They say he was pretty much unhittable. I don't think he ever played baseball again after high school, no college.

Probably the greatest athlete ever from these parts, if not him, his brother Jimmy.

Steve went onto play DB and Punter at UNC, drafted by the redskins, and had a car wreck on his way to the airport I believe on his way to washington and was paralyzed.

Whole family were tremendous athletes, brother Jimmy was a QB at Tenn. played CFL and NFL, other brother Erik played in CFL.

I had the opportunity to meet Steve Streater as a teenager in High School, he spoke at a SADD meeting in my high school... An excellent man as I remember!!

Streater was the real deal on the mound,,,,,,,,, yes remember his senior season well. He pitched every game that year. Was a great football player also, as previously stated played football for the Tarheels before his tragic accident which paralyzed him before he ever played one down in the NFL.

And he was a fastball pitcher. He was one of those kids that considered pitcher to be his position and that was where he was gonna play every game. I was told by someone who knew him well that he also pitched back to back games at the state championships. A rare breed he was. Tremendous athlete.

Didn't they change "pitching rules" in Legion baseball because this kid pitched too much?
