trying to rejuvenate this post. this is about the series on MTV about the Hoover HS football program in Hoover, Alabama.
check these links below. the coach makes a $94,000 salary, not exactly chickenfeed!. Is Charlotte Independence HS (or any other HS teams in NC) at this same level of a football program? how about a matchup of Hoover and Independence? they could play on a neutral field in (maybe) Atlanta?? see links; this coach really gets after it/ pushes the line to the max. does this remind you of any HS coaches in NC?
    comments please.

    maybe

did you go to the school? if so, what's it like, size, etc?
the football coach really seems like a tough-nut; don't know how much of that is "acting" for the TV show.
he really does make a $94,000 salary.

I have been watching it. It is decent entertainment. Some of my thoughts:

I played for Tom Knotts in the late 80's. There are some similarities. Knotts too was influenced early in his career by Steve Spurrier and installed a wide open passing attack when others either couldn't or wouldn't. Both coaches are able to motivate and manipulate their players in order to get the results he expects. I do not think that you would ever find Knotts lobbying for his team to be the #1 team in the country. He has always been much more interested in making his team better and turning boys into men.

NC rules do not permit two practices a day during the school year. I am surprised that they are on the field BEFORE school starts. I am not sure how these kids have enough time and energy to devote to their school work. I understand instilling a work ethic in the kids. But i think this is a bit much.

As for the show itself, I am sure some of it is scripted. ALL reality shows are...some more than others. But the game and practice scenes can't be faked. At least not in my opinion.

Is the Independence program on level with Hoover? Absolutely. They have won almost 100 straight games in the state's largest classification. In addition, they have scheduled games against top teams in South Carolina and Tennessee during that streak. Would they beat Hoover? I don't know. I haven't watched Independence play in a couple of years and all I have seen from Hoover is what they show on MTV. I do think, however, that the teams lead by Chris Leak would have been competitive with anyone. That offense was unstoppable and the defense as tough as I have ever seen.

Lastly, I believe that the coach there makes $94k. But it is subsidised by the booster club, not the school system. The stadium holds over 20,000 people and it is packed every friday night. Coaches at public schools in NC will never make that much money.

    thanks

    Thanks, law1ng2b2; great response.
Are there any schools in NC that subsidizes a coach's salary through booster funds? I had never heard of that in NC; sounds like that could get really messy (parent gives special donation to salary fund, but expects PT for their child in return.... that sort of thing??).

What size crowds does Independence draw?

I do not believe that the NCHSAA allows for coaching subsidies. Knotts entertained an offer from a school several years ago in South Carolina because the money was much better. There were rumors that Valdosta, GA approached him too with a nice financial package.

Not sure on the Independence crowds. The last game i saw there was in the playoffs several years ago and I would guess that there were 4,000 to 5,000 people there. When they play at Memorial Stadium in the playoffs, there are probably upwards of 10,000.

FWIW, i participated in two games at Memorial Stadium where the crowds were estimated at 20,000 or more. Harding vs West Charlotte in the 1986 State Semifinals and Harding vs Garner in the 1987 State Championship. But those were the exception and not the norm for Charlotte area games.

    getting good

I have enjoyed watching this show about the Hoover HS 2005 football team.
Just wondering what it really takes to get a program to this level.
Coaches, players, community support, administration support, etc.................everybody pulling together in the same direction.
