My son continues to receive invitations for showcases from all over the country just wondering how important are these showcases for a sophomore in high school? He is receiving them from as far away as Colorado,California and Florida. How do all these showcases get these players names,do they just pass names around from other showcases they have attended? Just wondering how should i handle all the different showcases, i don't want him missing out on something he should maybe be attending. Please give input!

Concentrate on showcases at or near the college he would like to attend to get his education.

Ahhh...one of the major questions to be asking. To answer your question about getting addresses. They bought it.

A general rule of thumb is if your son is not planning to attend the colleges in those areas, save your money until later:

I suggest that you contact Coach27 for specific info regarding your situation. He is always helpful in helping families.

    Save your money IMO

First of all what is his goal? If he goes to a showcase in Colorado what coaches are going to be there? Does he want to go to the Univ of Colorado? What about out of state tuition vs in state tuition? The same can be said of California showcase events. What are the benefits of going to a showcase this far from home?

PG has alot of showcase events each year. The regional ones are for IDing players for rankings and invitations to their National events down the road. Your looking at 549.00 to attend a PG showcase. Most of the regional showcase events are not attended by college coaches. Players looking to be recruiting on a national level benefit from PG events. But only if your a big time stud.

Local showcase events that are heavily attended by local college coaches is where your money is best spent. And many of these showcase events are attended by college coaches of all playing levels. What good does it do to be seen by all major d-1 coaches at a showcase if your not major d-1 material?

How do you know what level you can play at? How do you know how you stack up? Attend a local showcase and if your not one of the very best there you are not a national level recruit. Your more than likely not a major d-1 recruit. But you may be a solid college guy at some level. My advice is do not waste your money chasing showcase events around the country. There are more than enough right here every year in NC.

Who is the last NC HS baseball player you know that ended up at USC UCLA Stanford or any other California school? Who is the last HS player you know of that ended up at Florida State Florida or Miami? If your goal is to play at Miami or USC go to their summer prospect camp on their campus and see what their coaching staff thinks of you.

If your goal is to play college baseball and you want to get the most bang for your buck then spend your money where the schools are already at. If you want to get on the national radar then attend a local PG event. Do really really well and get an invite to the national underclass showcase. Do very well at that one and get an invite to the PG national showcase. Do very well at that and you will be a national follow guy.

Your not missing anything imo. From my own personal experience. If the big boys in our state are on you then your in pretty good shape. And if there not then there is a good chance USC and Miami are not going to be on you either.

    Showcases

Great response Kenny. You must be prepared for each event and show out to get any attention at all. These showcases are very expensive and if you get 2 at bats, 8 good swings in the cage and 20 pitches in the bullpen then you have completed a 695.00 Perfect Game showcase. Go to a winter camp of the schools you are interested in but most of your money should go to trainig of your body. My son told me that he wished he wouldn't have played so much in the summer before going to college because he was totally unprepared for the extensive weight training, running, and practice and should have spent money with a trainer to prepare his body rather than his game.Good luck because it is a very difficult decision on where to put your money>

27 gives great advice. Save it. You can do a couple here for that and if you out shine here. There spend it for the bigger national ones.

It's important to get an early gauge of where you stack up vs. other players in your area, and in your state. If you think you are D1 material...fine, but go out and see if others think the same. Not everyone is a Brian Goodwin, Levi Michael, Wil Myers, or Chris Munnelly(I use these examples due to early commits). The state of NC has about 18 D1 programs, 16 D2s, 4 D3s, and 10 juco/comm. colleges. That's nearly 50 college baseball programs!!! Last year there were a little over 9000 kids that played high school baseball in NC public schools. If you want to play college ball, and are not sure where you fit, get in touch with someone who knows the landscape..they are out there.
