    I believe this has been discussed ad nauseum here, but since the playoffs are upon us I thought I'd bring it up again. Where do you fall when it comes to expanding baseball playoffs as they have for football? Should we have 2/3 of the teams in each classification in the playoffs, or does that water it down too much?

    The Soccer system of 48 teams (per region) with the top-16 getting a first round bye seems nice.

    I would choose the 16 wild card teams from the non-qualifiers who have the best overall records and not assign them out by conference.

    That sounds reasonable. How about do a mock up when the playoffs are set and see who would be added based on your idea. I'd like to see if my Rocky Mount guys would make the cut.

    Pops, my problem with using overall records (which is what is happening beginning next year for all bids after two per conference) is the impact it will have on non-conference scheduling. When you have a conference like the new SW4A (Butler, East Meck, Independence, Myers Park, Providence, South Meck, Weddington, and eventually the new school in South Charlotte on Audrey Kell Rd.) where everyone is going to beat each other up in conference, there will be a big premium in scheduling "wins" in the non-conference games.

    Looking at the new 4A conferences, there are 13 4a schools playing in 4 mixed(4a/3a) leagues. 2 mixed conferences contain four 4a schools, 1 has 3, and 1 has 2. Go ahead and award the leagues containing an even # of 4a teams half participation, and the league containing three 4a teams, 1 or 2 on a rotating basis. That would yield 6 or 7 depending on rotation.

    One conference contains 6 teams. Award them 3 participants.

    Two conferences contain 8 teams. Award them 4 participants.

    Eight conferences contain 7 teams. Award them 3 participants.

    Total participants at this point is 41 or 42 teams.

    Go back, and award the remaining 6 or 7 slots among the eight conferences containing 7 teams on a rotating basis.

    Does that make any sense?
