    option #1 v. option #2

    ....
Option #1. Play ball period, any posiyion, period, be proud that you're talent and experience allows you the special opportunity to accomplish your goals in sports by being a well rounded ball player.

    Option #2. See Option #1.

    Something to ponder

I agree with One Putt you have gotten some great NC baseball minds respond to your post, but I would also put One Putt into that fold. It's great that you are concerned about this kids future eventhough he is not your own. I agree with the previous posts his first goal is to help his HS team whatever position they need him to play. Like Braves said catchers are a hard position to fill for college scouts. Come July 1st their Jr year Pitcher, Catchers and Big Hitters usually get the first call from recruiters.

"What position do you play son?"

That question is asked of every player as they move up to higher levels of ball. When he can answer "where ever you need me Coach" he will become a valuable member of that team. In high school there can be politics and agendas that may influence where kids play and when they play. Don't fight it with your mouth! Let the kid win those battles with his attitude (good!), his hard work and his talent.

I think that just as importantly, if not more so, a freshman in high school needs to establish himself in the classroom as well as the ball field. Also he is going to have to make decisions about how he is going to approach the "social" aspects of high school. Wrong choices in this department can have a long lasting negative influence on his future.

Follow the advice given here. Go to the website HSBaseballweb.com and find the guidelines for recruiting. This is a good breakdown on what a player should be doing year to year while in high school.

HAVE FUN! He only gets to play High school ball, with the kids he grew up with, for four years. No matter what the future holds, these are days he'll always remember, even after his playing days are over.

This opinion speaks to me and says a lot. My response is certainly not intended to to be confrontational or mean-spirited in any way. However, I would like to share some things. First, the post form guys like Coach 27, Braves, One Putt and others are so valuable. Listen to their advice.

Secondly, my former high school, Southern Guilford, lost a football player in a car accident Saturday morning. Cameron Scott Wayne, "Scotty", was killed. My brother-n-law is on the football staff. The head coach was my quarterback when we played together back in the day. The staff are some of my closest friends, and the entire community, like others around this state, are hurting from the loss of such a great young man.

I have said this before and I'll say it again. High School athletics mean something. The ability we have to work with young men and women on a daily basis and the opportunity to influence them in a positive way is such a privlidge. As a parent of a 3 year old and a 1 month old, I try to remind myself everyday, that none of us are garunteed our next breath, much less the chance to play a sport at the next level.

Scotty had commited to play football at ECU next year. What a talent on the field, and what an even better person in the hallways.

Play the game, and enjoy the game. Work hard and be a great person. Cherish your opportunities and leave your mark as a person who did things with class, dignity and work ethic that sets the bar.
