Just heard a couple of hours ago that this fine young man lost his life in a tragic one car accident this afternoon. I know him because he played on the Carolina Cubs a few years back and I know that he was part of a very fine family. I am not sure where or if he was playing baseball presently, but I wanted to share this news in case anyone knew him. Please remember his family in your prayers.

    "Big John"

I first met John when he was a 9 year old player for the "Banks Blaze." It was a travel team put together from folks around the Kinston , Ayden Grifton area. Later I would be fortunate enough to coach him and get to know his wonderful mom and dad , Lisa and Carlton. We stayed friends over the years and when my son went to Jr day at NCSC John , Lisa and Carlton were there as well. I remember spending the day together and talking about old times. John would star at North Lenoir HS and help them bring home 3 state titles. He played one year for the Dirtbags but had to take the next summer off because of an injury. John was not able to continue his career in college even though he was a very sought after player who was very talented. He had some back problems and didnt want to continue to fight that. He was a student at ECU.

I got the call this afternoon while I was out eating dinner. I am just sick over this as is our whole family. You will never meet a more respectful and wonderful young man as John. And his mom and dad , Lisa and Carlton are salt of the earth. Some of the best folks you will ever meet. My heart goes out to them in this time of grief. I can not begin to imagine how hard this has to be. Please pray for the family and friends of John Alphine.

My heart goes out to the North Lenoir/Banks Blaze "family". I also remember the old AAU days when my son's team would compete with those kids. They were some of the best times... great kids, great parents, great memories.
