As a dad who has taken two daughters from rec ball to college, I've been to a lot of fastpitch tournaments in the past 16 seasons. None of them were as bad as the PG tournament last weekend (June 12-13) in Gastonia.
Umps were inept, directors were not in command...teams, including the Cage 2Game team that won it, were chippy and rude. Also, the team that ended up winning it added a player to the active roster overnight, which was not allowed per the rulebook but the director allowed it anyway.
I get that sometimes it's a s-itshow and there's not much you can do about it. This was not one of those and could have been prevented. A 5-game guarantee is great...but the bracket made no sense, the umps were horrible and nobody knew what they were doing.
Case in point: baseball batters boxes were lined in on both diamonds. One team had a runner called for being out of the box, which by then had ceased to exist. Batters have four feet from the back of the plate to work in, and the batter was well short of that. Ump didn't care and called her out. A coach argued the call--it killed a rally--and could not make the ump understand. The base ump came up (from behind) and made contact with the coach, who understandably didn't like it. Long story short, coach was ejected, director summoned, nothing done. She said it was her best team of umps that weekend. SMH
Apparently the umps did not know about interference or that a fly ball to deep center is NOT a home run if it bounces over the fence and both fielders raise arms indicating out of play. Home plate ump told pitcher AT THE TIME he thought it bounced over, but did not confer with base ump who made the call.
All that added up to $500 wasted ($100 per game) and a really amateur, fly-by-night event. My girls played and I coached Top Gun, ASA, NSA, USSSA, Got Game, etc. There have been tournaments along the way that have been bad for one reason or another, but this one was bad all the way around. Not worth the money, the aggravation and certainly not the incompetence shown by the PG folks at that tournament.
    Just my two cents...
