....a few years agoaleigh had the Pony Nationals that spread teams from Walnut Creek to Cary Highschool.
    It was awesome.
As a sidebar, Raleigh also had the CIAA conference basketball tourney at the RBC. What happened to the D3 National tournament? Trust me, those kids could play.

These events were squashed by the city of Raleigh.

    FUBAR.

I wish the best for the kids playing soccer.
Atleast Raleigh got that decision right!

    Help us out TBR.

    The story says Boys...

Soccer is bigger than softball and is a recognized international sport.
Softball needs a single unifying organization and needs to spread the sport around the world... then maybe you can have an event like this.

I think it comes down to two main factors:

    1. Soccer is much simpler to learn than softball.
    2. Soccer has much better PR people.

Also, soccer fields are much easier to maintain.

    Boys VS. Girls

Let's just say there has always been more emphasis on boys sports than girls..even at the local rec fields the boys have nicer fields..I will have to say I have played many venues this year, and AAU has done their homework producing more availability for the younger set of girls than others. I guess in general there are lots more boys playing sports than girls, but that doesn't mean that there shouldn't be quality playing area for this young athletes.

Soccer is the perfect sport for

lots of kids. My girls played it at 5 & 6. They weren't any good but no one knew it . . . . and that's the beauty of it. With the exception of the goalie a rec league soccer player can run up and down and occasionally kick the ball, burn some calories and, most importantly, have no sense of failure.

Softball is far less forgiving. It's very difficult to hide in softball. Poor skills are punished rather severely (strikeout, error). Not good in a 'every child is a winner' culture.

C'mon Dog...what kid is developed at age 5 or 6 for any sport. I don't think that degrading another sport is the answer. Kids may not throw or pitch or hit a ball the same, but an exceptionally skilled athlete(s) in any sport can not be ignored. All due respect and I'm not picking on you Bro.....I will admit some sports are harder to play than others, but I do see alot more "lets tear an athlete down" then I see "lets build them up", especially where youth sports is concerned. It is a sad microcosm of society. People kick you when you are down, and they kick you when you are up. And the sad thing is they say and do anything to justify it.

I posted originally because I do feel that if the governing bodies of softball could actually build up...they could do what CASL has accomplished and more. It's like my DD, she had a goal from day one and she did that, and now that she is there she has a couple more goals and she didn't let anyone compromise those goals. She keeps going, working to get better even when no one wanted her. That work ethic sustained her through an ACL tear at 13. You can learn so much by examples, and even when you lose if you learn from it and get better you never have a bad experience because failure leads to success. Sorry to get off thread.

    No disagreement at all

Clearly, great soccer players are great athletes. As an exercise physiologist in a former life I recognize its fitness benefits and wish more kids played it (far better for weight control than softball). However, the game played by most kids in the rec leagues is far less "ego challenging" than baseball or softball.
