The overhand arm speed is now considered a big part of the formula that coaches use to recruit. It simply gives them a better look at the athletes potential ability. A good long toss program is good way to build arm strength.

To get actuate top speed results the ball should be clocked within a few feet after coming out of the players hand. The further the ball travels it will always lose velocity. See where you stand below.

A matrix for you to review:

55 – 59 – pretty normal – 80% of the athletes at the H.S. level will be here

    60 – 65 – considered a gun – 15% will be at this level

    66 – 69 – an absolute cannon – a few % will be at this level

    What Players Have Best Arms

What player or players have you seen or are on your team now have the best overhand arms?

I remember seeing Jen Chamberlain 3B (NCSU) throwing always impressed me. She had a cannon!

Where did these number come from? The reason I ask, after coaching HS age players I seriously doubt that 80% of a HS roster is at 55MPH, my daughter plays on a very good HS team and I would guess that out of 13 players only maybe 5 are at 55, though 2 are above 60.

    rating catchers...

This is a component that we now use to rate catchers. We no longer look at "pop times" by themselves, but now measure three attributes.

    1. release time. from pop of glove to 10 feet out of catchers hand.
    2. accuracy
    3. velocity (mph)

This allows us to break down the catch and throw into measurable results, thus giving us an idea on what component we need to work on.

Can be used at all positions.... when you think about it, a defensive play off a pitched or batted ball, is a
    1. catch and release of the ball quickly
    2. while throwing with accuracy
    3. and velocity

....not if she throws into the stands or better yet, throws it to first when the play should be made at home.

As in golf, if you can hit your driver 300 yards and it puts you in the woods, then don't rely on the driver.

    :juggle:

Ps: USC 7 NCSU 3 .... what a waist of a damn good parking pass.

We tested this at combine and had one over 65 and had three more over 60, the rest were 50-59.
