WEDDINGTON SOFTBALL: Three players have signed college scholarships: Allie Cashion (Appalachian State), Jessica Fellmeth (Lenoir-Rhyne) and Taylor Morris (Mars Hill).

Providence, Weddington softball teams put their rivalry aside

Southwestern 4A softball rivals Providence and Weddington put their rivalry aside recently when a Weddington player's father became gravely ill with leukemia.

“After hearing about the loss of another one of my players grandparents, the coaches at Providence took things to another level,” Weddington coach Claire Lyerly said.

The Providence coaches and players brought meals for the family of the Weddington center fielder whose father was sick, and one day the Panthers crashed the Weddington practice to do it again.

“Then we allowed our girls to mingle and play games,” Lyerly said. “It is a great story of how teams can be such rivals on the field, but off, we all know that we have big hearts and care greatly for those we play alongside of.”

Finally some good press coverage for high school softball! :laugh3: :laugh3: :laugh3:

    Nice thing to do

Yes, some probably know each other but it's still a very nice thing to do. Alot of girls played rec /travel ball together when they were young and now they're at rival high schools. Some of our Sun Valley girls played with Porter Ridge, Piedmont and Forest Hills girls. We're rivals on the field but
    friends off.

    Not really...

A few are acquaintances or know each other from the past, but for the most part the girls were getting to know one another better at the practice we went to that Coach Lyerly allowed us to join in on. To my knowledge none of the girls are currently on any other teams together.

We asked Coach Lyerly what we could do to help when we found out what was going on. She responded and our parents, players and coaches helped. It is simply doing what is right and continually trying to teach that to the young women we coach beyond the game.

Sadly, the father of this young Weddington player did pass away this past weekend. We play Weddington tomorrow at 5:30pm at Weddington. I am not sure if the player will be there, but our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to her, the family and Weddington.
