Most of these have been hit upon in earlier posts. These are the qualities of a "five tool" coach (IMO!)

1. Teach the Game... from the basics to the finer points. This can raise the average team to a championship caliber team. This should include not only the "mechanics" of the game, but also the concept of "team", sportsmanship, discipline and academic responsibility.

2. Provide the best facilities and equipment possible... this gives the kids a safe, productive place to practice and play. Also, it should be fan friendly to encourage folks to come see games. This makes it more fun for the players and gives a boost to fund raising.

3. Promote Deserving Players... if a coach has a player that desires to play beyond high school and that coach believes the player has the ability (athletically and academically) to do so, then he should do everything in his power to help that player reach his goals. Also teach that player the importance of "giving back" to the program.

4. Play to Win... every player on the team and every parent/fan in the stands needs to fully understand that the coach is going to put the nine players on the field that gives the team it's best opportunity to win. The coach needs to encourage competition for playing time. In other words, every starter needs to "win" his position and time on the field. This makes every player, as well as the team, the best they can be.

5. Develop/Encourage the "Feeder System"... a coach should know where his future players are coming from. Camps, at the high school, for the youth league level players in the area can begin relationships between the coach and players. Go see some youth league games, the kids will get a kick out of playing with the coach watching. Get to know the coaches at that level and let them know what is expected of players when they reach high school.

As is true with the "five tool" player, it is not common for a high school coach to excel at all of the above. But if he strives to, then his program will be successful, and respected, for many seasons to come.

 

While I concider myself a good coach, I may not fall into the catagory of a "5 tool coach" I do try to follow those 5 things as best I can. I continue to try and teach the game from the ground up and give our girls the best exprience they can possibly have. We have great faciities that we are very proud of and keep them in as best shape as we can. I do wish I could do more to promote the girls that want to go on and play after high school. That is one area I could use some help with. Maybe that would be a good thread to talk about!!

 

For what it's worth, I also consider you a good coach. You and your accomplice! And the facilities have definitely benefited in the last few years!

All the work you do before they even get to high school speaks volumes for your dedication to the girls and the game.

Not to mention the players that have gone on to play in college! Including your own DD!

... if you are trying, then you are succeeding! In most cases, it's the effort to improve at something that accomplishes the improvement.
Hey, there was only one guy I ever heard of that could really do it all to perfection... and it's said that that dude could even walk on water!

As far as help in the recruiting aspect of the game goes, this site is a perfect place for that information to be found. There are people who have the knowledge and experience out there. We just have to ask the questions.

I think he was more of the kind of guy you would find on a mound... I believe he was the "saves" leader in his league. Now that Moses dude could hit! With that staff he swung, they say he could part a sea!
