Hoping to Set the Record Straight

There has been some discussion on this board about the comments reportedly made by Ardrey Kell Coach, Hal Bagwell during the 4A Championship series.

I had a chance to talk with him about those comments, as they were reported, and found quite a different sorry than what was in the paper.

I asked Coach if he would mind if I help set the record straight on TBR and he agree.

1. First and for most, Coach Bagwell and Coach Vincent are close friends. Coach Bagwell has the greatest respect for Coach Vincent and his program. It (Rose) is the program that he tries to emulate.

2. Like Braves mentioned in an early post, the comments as quoted seemed quite unBagwell like, that possibly the reported caught him at the wrong time and or miss quoted him. Both seem to be the case. Coach mentioned to the reporter that he was in shock after game one. Not meaning shocked in the sense that they could not lose a game, just the shock of losing a hard fought, extra inning game in the championship series and have not had time to decompress yet. He went on to say that unlike in 1999, where Rose clearly had a superior team to his club, that these two teams were closely matched and that if AK played better than they did on Friday, AK would have a chance to win twice on Saturday, and he would be surprise (at his club) if they did not play better Saturday. The writer mentioned playing Rose in 1999 but left out the respective in playing them.

3. Coach went on to say that the bottom line in the end, was that Rose made the plays and got the big hits to win. We (AK) did not. All the credit goes to them. Coach Vincent had his players there expecting to win and they went out and did it. We were just hoping to win. While we are disappointed in the result, we give a heart felt congratulations to them on their victory.

I'm not surprised that is the case. I have known Coach Hal Bagwell for many years and never "once" have I ever (in public or private) heard him belittle another team. If anything, I've heard him go the other direction giving an opponent too much respect, but that is the "coach speak" I was referring to.

After all the years that he has had a healthy relationship with the media in Charlotte, I believe he has found that someone has their own agenda.

Welcome to the big city. I can assure you that Mike London, with the Salisbury Post, would never form in answer that would incite another team.

 

I believe that if Cliff, Langston, or Brett had been covering the games, the reporting would have been significantly different. It was a stringer working on a short dead line.

 

I concur. I believe that Cliff has done an outstanding job all year...and his prepsports video is a nice bonus.

 

WHoever wrote the comments needs to print a retraction then...

 

Don't hold your breath. The chances of that happening is the day the Charlotte Observer closes its doors. It was a stringer, not a day to day reporter

 

Gotta Get the Timely Hits

In reading the play by plays from Mincmi, timely hits made the difference in both games. Rose got the hits at the right time and AK did not. Coach Bagwells comments did not hit a baseball - Roses number 1 to 9 hitters did.
