I am not saying a pitcher should wait to HS before she starts pitching. What I am saying is that several great pitchers have done it. My point is that there should be no hurry at the 10 and 12 year old levels to become "dominant"...there is plenty of time. 300 to 400 pitches a day seems like a bit much to me at any age...just my opinion. 120 pitches a day/4 times per week seems to be enough at 12 years old..again..just my humble opinion.

I agree my dd has thrown about 200-250 pitches a night since end of her 5th grd yr. that has always been a good # for her. we dont just throw all practice we also work on fundamentals as well as spins got to have those spins!!!!!!! not much fun for her but shes finally figured out shes got to do it.:juggle:

    I agree

I agree that 300 to 400 pitches a day is toooo much!
150 to 200 is probably ample! 25 or so per pitch!
A good guide, I think, to go by, is lets say she is in a game, she will pitch 6 pitches to each batter (3 batters per inning) 7 innings, that is 126 pitches! Now you want her to practice pitching enough, to have the stamina to throw all 7 innings, without losing any of her zest, zing, snap! Now to be able to pitch to only 3 batters per inning for all 7, take her to dinner at the place of her choice, because she just pitched her butt off!

    Sounds like

Sounds like she is the one that wants this, so keep on keeping on! Just be careful, let her be the decision maker! (for the most part)! I posted a guide that was given to me years ago, I think it is a good guide to go by! Good Luck to your DD!

thanks so far for all the great info. one thing for anyone out there with a young pitcher youve got to make the practice fun for her because at that age if you dont chances are youll burn her out. :ears:

Ihave people ask me all the time about how many pitches to throw and how many times a week to do it.
In off season I think three times plus a weekly lesson is pretty good, in season it is according to your schedule but at least twice a week including lesson is the min. Now as for number of pitches I stress quality over quantity As someone above has stated its about muscle memory which is gained by repitition. The repitition has to be done correctly or all you get is the muscles memorising the wrong motion, snap, etc.
A coach alot smarter then me (most are just ask them) Said practice does not make perfect , practice makes permanet, only perfect practice makes perfect
    Just my 2 cents

    different view

my DD has never thrown it better then she is right now and we do not follow any strict rule of so many pitches every day of a certain type or every other day. We have worked more in the last two years on conditioning... running, weights, arm strength, etc etc. We only throw about 2 times a week (2 day before she is to pitch)... about 50 pitches each outing. Perhaps this isnt the correct approach but it seems to be working in our instance. I had a former assistance coach at Ryder University tell me that in order to be a pitcher you had to be about half maniac.. I think she was just referring to mental toughness. DD has become much more razor as she has gotten older and maybe that is just the key to her success.

    Have seen her...

I have seen her workouts and seen her pitch. I am thinking about calling social services on her pops aka her "everyday pitching coach". He is waaaaaayyyy too hard on her and I think she wants to move in with her travel coach and go to Union county schools....I think she mentioned Piedmont High as the coaches were very good and very good looking. :jester: :dizzy2:

Travel coach says he has plenty of room....maybe even putting one of his own out to make room.:22:
