    I have a friend that is trying to get into the sporting goods business.
    He is trying to carry good lines for an affordable price. Just trying to make a living.
    Isn't it interesting that no one locally will let them sell their goods at tournaments unless they get a big piece of the pie!
    Not just a vendors fee but 10-20% of the sales!
    It is every where-Gastonia USSSA, Concord AAU............
    It is a monopoly!
    They are so afraid that someone will take some of their profits(which is not the intent at all), that they are willing to make their tournaments the same mundane, hypocritical tourneys that they always have been!

    I have always found the ancillary business at tournaments interesting. I never really knew how they got connected and how they were charged. I just never really asked. Then I went to Jupiter Fla. for the PG WWB World Series and was astonished what they were being charged. I don't know how they make any money.

    If anybody has done that, I wish they would explain that part of the business to us.

    Of course it is....they don't hide that fact. But I wouldn't combine showcase ball with that group. Showcase ball is exactly what it states...showcasing a player's talent before a group of scouts that may have interest. The quality of showcase events is what is up for debate.

    I will never understand the purpose of travel ball with a kid 12 and under. At that age it is never about competition. Heck, at that age they don't even play on a "real' field with "real' rules....but don't let me get off topic (not that I have ever done that before):cheer:

    why me??

    why do i get dragged into things like this??? ya know i'm gonna take the bait!!

    here's my input:

    I've heard the 10%, 20%, $1500.00 up front and 10% thing for the last two years. the only thing that i have ever paid was a small, and i mean small percentage of what i sold with no guarantee on the minimum. It became obivious that the tournament director believed that my cost on a 249.00 bat was about 50.00???? NOT!!!!

    so, i have two thoughts for this guy to think about:

    1. the tournament director owns the field from the entrance to the back fence, right??? but he dont own the parking lot and every one must got through that to get to the field. some places required you to have a permit to sell and they range from $35.00 to $175.00 per day/weekend. and if you have the permit, there is nothing the tournament director can do. if its not required, theres nothing the man can do - free country, most tournaments are on city or county property and the local police will not remove you for trying to make a living.

    2. SPONSOR A TOURNAMENT. think about it, no competition, people will want to purchase the items you're giving to the winning teams/mvp and no competition.

    in closing, tournament directors ARE all about the bottom dollar thing and either you pay, sit home or out think them.

    I just plain like the way you think, Cheeze!!!

    I like the parking lot theory! And you would have a corner on those parents, coaches whatever that gets ejected from games! They have nothing better to do than shop, at that point! You may want to consider carring binoculars and walkie-talkies!
    And hey, sell some hot dogs and drinks for less than the price of a car payment, and even I will shop there!

    Not that there are not some peoitives but it's a business.
