    Mudcat,

Thanks for posting this...I've been on the road the past couple of days and had intended to get this on the board. Coach Smith will be missed at TCR, but as he says in the article, he's not retiring, just taking some time off so he can watch his son Kenny play at Western Carolina during his last year of eligiblity.

What a career...three state championships, countless players that moved on to the college ranks and several that have been drafted and played professional ball.

Truly one of the best and my son was very fortunate to have played for him.

I have a feeling the replacement is already there and he is a good one.

I agree. The program should be in good hands for the next several years. And what a great opportunity....not only will his replacement be taking over one of the top programs in the state, but TCR's new stadium has to be one of finest HS baseball facilities I've ever seen. (Of course, West's is pretty nice too)

he did not retire. he emphasized that and i'd be willing to bet that he'll be coaching at tcr next year. he merely wants to see his son play his last year of college ball after not being able to see him the past few years

I guess I missed that part in the article. Went back and re-read it and still don't see it. Maybe something he told some people personally. Don't know, just posted what the article said.

It was in the Citizen-Times article.

I never read Citizen Times except during baseball season. Went and found those articles and they paint a different story. Bet the AD wishes he hadn't announced it as such. Wherever Coach Smith lands he will do well. I wish him luck.

Tom Smith is of the highest quality in terms of both coaching and in terms of humanity. Though I have not spent alot of time around him except at the NCBCA Clinic, he is top notch!!
