One of the greatest feats in high school history will be on Friday if Independence beats East Meck and wins 100 in a row. Only one other team has done so (DeLaSalle). Hopefully my alma mater keeps its fans civilized and no one gets beat up in another gang-related event.

For the dozens that show up for the game, it will be historic. The turnout at Charlotte High School Football games is like to going to a Duke Football game, they start when you get there so they will have a witness.

    WHY??

I am not from the Charlotte area; so explain to me why the HS football attendance is low. I have heard it is low from other sources as well.

I do not live in Charlotte, but here goes.

    1. Who wants to get shot by some punk at a high school football game?
2 Charlotte sucks as a sports town in the first place.
3 How can they be sports fans, when they read the Observer. The Sports
section has improved but please, it's is a disgrace for a city that size
    4. Too many transplants. The majority of the population moved there from
    elsewhere.
    5. Revert back to #2 again

I'm from Charlotte, here's my two cents why:

    1) It's a pro sports town (but only if you're good-i.e., see Bobcats attendance).
    2) Related to #1, the transplants are from major northern and midwest cities where pro sports dominate. The locals have always been college fans first based on where they went to school or who they like. But again, the team better be good! (i.e., see Duke, UNC attendance at football games)
    3) There's so many high schools in Charlotte - the attendance gets scattered between the schools. It's not like the whole town waits for Friday night to go to the big local game, like on "Friday Night Lights." There's several games to choose from if you just like high school football and don't have a rooting interest for any team. I would say that Kannapolis is the closest thing we have to a team and a small town that live and die high school football.
    4) Traffic on Friday nights - it's terrible, just getting home from work is a hassle, and who wants to get back in it to go see Independence kill somebody down there in Matthews.
    5) You're right - we're not a good sports town. My pet peeve is that I could not find a radio station carrying the afternoon major league baseball playoff games in the whole Charlotte area. They'd rather do talk radio, which I can't listen to for more than 5 minutes at a time. And again, you're right, the Observer could do a better job. We do get plenty of Panther coverage (back to #1), but if they had successive bad years, like say the Arizona Cardinals, I would predict that attendance would fall off terribly. We're quite the fair-weather group here.

Hit the nail on the head. It will never have that "community support" that you find in towns like K-Town, Shelby and others. It's a shame, but oh so true.

...now, having to attend games with "thugs" in attendance, keeps the casual fan away

I didn't mind hanging out with the thugs sometimes. They get hyped for the games Especially for the 2001-2002 game between East and Indy for the WNC title. We thought we stood a chance all week. Man we were wrong.

I nominate this for 'Dumbest Post Ever' award, Braves.

They won 100 in a row. That is deserving of Sportscenter at least. Too bad it was against East who I love so dearly and have never been the same since Scott Stein. Indy is absolutely filthy even though it is the first time in years they aren't a lock for the state title.
