Does anybody know what the rules are this year in NC for middle school bats? I keep hearing conflicting info. I always thought it was -5, but somebody is telling me it's changed to -3 this year (which i find hard to believe). Also, are they going by the BBCOR rules like in high school? One of my son's coaches is telling him that his 2012 -5 Voodoo "isn't legal because it isn't stamped BBCOR on it". I also think that's a load of bull.

    Can anybody clarify??

    Thanks

    CMS

the cms rules are really weird in my opinion. It seems if I am reading correctly that you can use a 30/20 (drop 10) but you can not use a 31/26 simply because the bat is one inch longer. Is that just me or is that strange?

    thanks

So we were told at the parents meeting today that they could use -5 bats, but they HAD to have the BBCOR stamp? Huh??? If I'm not mistaken, there is no such thing as a -5 bat with a BBCOR stamp? Only -3's have the BBCOR stamp.

    Am I wrong???

Here is a reply to an inquiry I made to CMS athletic Director after several readers asked me about it...

In my opinion its a very poorly thought out rule and there was no inquiry made to local baseball people that actually understand bat size. I have spoken with three very well thought of baseball leaders in Charlotte and all three said it was a very poor rule to ask a 7th grade kid to swing the same bat as a 12th grader.

One thing you have to realize in this school district, middle school sports are a nuisance to the department, its one more piece of work. Instead of using common sense to make the program semi-decent they continue to do the same thing year after year or create hardships with decisions. They used a total lack of common sense to recreate conferences this year, it has led to all sorts of issues for schools.

Meanwhile Union County, a bordering county, offers opportunities for 5 and 6 times as many middle school students in athletics.

I have been in contact with other city-county athletic directors across the state regarding middle school bat size standards and we remain in dialogue on this topic. The middle school bat size standards posted on the Web-site are a compromise of the January 1, 2012 new NFHS standards. Wake County Schools have adopted the same bat size standards for their 2011-12 middle school baseball season. Additionally, the state of Illinois adopted these bat standards in 2005 in their middle school baseball programs.

I am also aware that USA Baseball is currently conducting a study, on the middle school age group, that will be completed in 2013 and most likely result in nationwide standards. Until then, CMS will use the middle school baseball bat standards posted on our Web-site and shared with middle school athletic directors.

This is my biggest issue with it. Granted, my son as well as others would probably have no issue swinging a -3. But, there are probably a lot more kids that wouldn't be able to do it. I've seen some small 7th graders! No way they could swing a stick that size!
